OUR LOCATION

We are located in Hanmer Springs in North Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. Hanmer Springs is 90 minutes drive northwest of Christchurch. Hanmer Springs was built up around the Hanmer Springs pools and is famous New Zealand-wide for its thermal pools and romantic hillsides. The town is perpetually amongst New Zealand’s top rated Holiday destinations. Hanmer Springs has many wonderful restaurants, shops, horse back riding, tramping and mountain bike trails, as well as having a heli base located just south of the village for ease of flying to the back country. This location makes it easy to add a day of fishing to your holidays with the family right from Hanmer Springs.

The map to the right shows New Zealand’s south island. Our main guiding area is highlighted in yellow at the NW of the south island. Within our operating area, but not limited to it, there are literally dozens of waters to fish, from small spring creeks, seasonal streams, small to large rivers, and a variety of lakes. The opportunities are endless. The other key is that we are situated to be able to quickly move east-west, across the island in times of different weather conditions that impact our waters. Reefton is one of our main fly fishing guiding area on the West Coast.

Car rentals are best made through the variety of companies at the Christchurch airport.

International travel generally flies to Auckland on the north island, then connects with an hour flight to Christchurch. Travel from your home country may include direct or connecting flights. Travel from Los Angeles, USA is 12 hours, Vancouver, Canada is 14 hours, from Sydney, Australia 3 1/2 hrs, and Singapore is 11 hrs.

The accommodations available on your trip include lodges/ inns/ hotels/ motels/ bed and breakfasts/ campgrounds/ back country huts/ back country camping. We can provide detailed options to you when we discuss your trip logistics. There are many different accommodations in the Hanmer Springs area, as well as the remainder of our guiding area.

We are located an hour from the WEST COAST fishing region as well. It doesn’t matter what magazine or internet site you view, the west coast of New Zealand’s south island consistently rates as one of the world’s top “most scenic” drives. It is an amazing drive, of persistent vistas from peak to sea. The west coast is an incredible rainforest, the transition of plant species from the coast to the alps a wonderful experience. Driving the coastline and enjoying the Nikau Palms and tree ferns while zig zagging on highway 6 is, indeed, a special trip.’

The West Coast area is 10% of New Zealand’s surface with less than 1% of the population. Imagine the potential!
This is a place where nature is still the way nature was created, 90% of the Coast are protected reserves and national parks.

Here there is no saying “the good old days”; we are still in the good old days.
The West Coast has 100% wild and self-sustaining fisheries where the Brown Trout is king. Some good Rainbow Trout, Salmon and Kahawai are also found.

Main Centres
Westport – Main town in the north of the region with 4600 inhabitants and located at the mouth of the mighty fish rich Buller River. The town was established in 1861 by gold miners and large amounts of gold were found in the district. There is still gold in the area and there is nothing to stop you panning for it. Westport has its own airport serviced by Air New Zealand Link via Wellington or by chartered aircraft flights to and from Christchurch. The closest international airports are Christchurch and Wellington.
Greymouth – The capital and also the largest town on the Coast. Best known for its jade crafts, Shantytown historic gold town and award winning Monteiths’ Brewery.
Hokitika – Main town in the south West Coast and host to the West Coast Museum, craft galleries, many historic buildings and the native fish of New Zealand aquarium.

Travel Instructions
Access to the region is easy and spectacularly scenic. You can reach the Coast through the Buller Gorge from Picton or Nelson, from Christchurch through the Lewis Pass via historic Reefton or over the high alpine Arthur’s Pass and from Queenstown through Haast Pass. The roads are easy to drive and not crowded at all. Rental cars are available. There are many bus companies regularly travelling to and from the West Coast.
